Body Pressure: On March 27, 2007 the artist placed three bands on her body. One around her finger, her arm and ankle. She never took the bands off for any reason. She routinely tightened the bands. The bands remained on her body until August 4, 2008 when after sixteen months the finger band had disintegrated and fell off. The other bands were immediately removed. From that day to the present moment the artist has recorded all involuntary or kinesthetic instances of her body remembering the presence of the bands. On the eventual date that her body forgets the absence of the bands, the project will end. The project explores the boundaries of the body. The band's integration into the artist's body challenges the view that the body is a fixed entity and explores the body's potential fluidity. The project also explores presence, absence, loss and memory. The project documents the process of the artist's body forgetting the bands. |
