In this Burlesque-drag-contortionist routine, Rebecca performs to Bruce Springsteen's pink cadillac. Her risqué performance explodes the sexual euphemism of the song: pink cadillac equals cunt. By performing what is merely being insinuated, Rebecca unveils the underlying misogyny of the song: objectifying female genitalia for male pleasure. Throughout the performance Rebecca's body is made to look like the car with head-light pasties, g-string reflectors, and chromed paneling. The car is not only a euphemism but also a stand in for the female body. The performance explores how technology becomes a surrogate for desire. During the course of the performance Rebecca assumes several roles including Bruce, the girl, the car, the vagina, the object of desire and the desiring. The subversive conflation of these roles undermines the clear, familiar, pop song structure of horny dude desiring sexy babe and opens these roles up to queer possibilities. |
